COOL THINGS TO DO IN ATLANTA IN OCTOBER

How about scaring up some October fun with these cool things to do?


The clouds part and reveal a full moon; a fog drifts across a quiet graveyard; the ground rumbles as the undead rise again -- and Atlanta comes alive with fun things to do. OK, all Halloween jokes aside, have a great October getting into some of these activities and events.



  1. The 30th annual Out On Film Festival shows 130 gay films and videos at three different theaters. Sept. 27 -- Oct. 7.

  2. The Atlanta Black Theatre Festival delivers 40 plays in four days, including single acts, solos, youth theater and full-length plays. Oct. 3 -- 6. 

  3. The Pumpkin Festival at Stone Mountain Park features family shows, games, storytelling, kids’ activities and a pie-eating contest. Oct. 5 -- 28, weekends. 

  4. Fright Fest at Six Flags over Georgia has plenty of tricks and treats (plus ghosts, ghouls and zombies) waiting for you. Oct. 5 -- 31. 

  5. Netherworld thrills and terrifies with stunt actors in intense makeup, movie-quality special effects and detailed sets. Oct. 5 -- Nov. 4.

  6. A3C Festival and Conference , Oct. 3 -- 7 A huge hip-hop festival, a conference with an allstar lineup of speakers, and a summit for social change. Not to mention a "2-Day journey with Wu-Tang Clan through the 36 Chambers." So, basically, everything. This is an only-in-Atlanta event not to be missed.

  7. The Edgewood Mac and Cheese Festival features unlimited samples of macaroni & cheese from local restaurants, with music by local bands at Walker Park. Oct. 6. 

  8. Destination East Point brings live entertainment, acrobats, artists and food vendors to downtown East Point. Oct. 6. 

  9. The 8th annual Atlanta Hip Hop Day Festival features Atlanta artists, b-boy and b-girl exhibits, emcee battles, turntablism and graffiti artists at Woodruff Park. Oct. 6 and 7. 

  10. The Sweet Auburn Music Fest celebrates R&B, hip-hop and gospel music in the historic Sweet Auburn district. Includes food trucks and vendors. Oct. 6 and 7. 

  11. Oktoberfest Atlanta brings beer, German food, live music and games to Historic Fourth Ward Park. Oct. 12 --14. 

  12. The 48th Annual Atlanta Pride Festival is the largest Pride event in the Southeast, complete with a parade, food, music and frivolities. Oct. 12 --14.  

  13. The Castleberry Hill Loft Tour allows the public to explore historic buildings converted into beautiful residential lofts. Oct. 13.

  14. The Great Atlanta Beer Fest brings 150 beers, cider and wine to Georgia State Stadium, plus live music, football on big TVs and food for sale. Oct. 13. 

  15. Run Like Hell is a 5K race with a costume contest and a children’s 1K at historic Oakland Cemetery. Oct.13. 

  16. The Oakhurst Porchfest is a neighborhood grassroots music festival where you can walk around to hear diverse music being played on porches and in yards. Oct. 13. 

  17. The Atlanta Chili Cook Off offers various options of chili (spicy, mild, chicken, beef, vegetarian) and allows you to vote for your favorite. Oct. 13. 

  18. AFROPUNK is a multicultural weekend of live music with an arts and craft market, and food trucks at 787 Windsor St. SW. Oct. 13 and 14. 

  19. France-Atlanta offers innovative films, performances, talks, exhibitions and workshops that connect France and the Southeast. Oct. 15 -- 24. 

  20. Haunted Halloween features a haunted mansion, spooky trails, games, a carnival, food vendors and a cash bar at the Atlanta History Center. Oct. 19. 

  21. Taste of Atlanta brings samples from 100 of Atlanta’s best restaurants to Historic Fourth Ward Park, plus celebrity-chef demos. Oct. 19 -- 21. 

  22. Fall Festival on Ponce features fine arts and crafts, folk art, a children’s area, food trucks and acoustic music in historic Olmsted Linear Park. Oct. 20 and 21. 

  23. The Atlanta 10 Miler & 5K begins and ends at Atlantic Station. Oct. 21. 

  24. The Little 5 Points Halloween Festival features an epic community parade, plus food and drink, live entertainment,pumpkin carving, street vendors and more. Oct. 20. 

  25. The Atlanta Horror Film Festival brings horror, sci-fi, gore, zombie, creepy, mystery and dark comedy films to the Synchronicity Theatre. Oct. 25 -- 27. 

  26. Fright Night is Fernbank Museum of Natural History’s Halloween party, featuring a DJ and a costume contest, plus craft beer, cocktails and small plates for sale. Oct. 26. 

  27. Halloween Night on Callanwolde Mountain includes trick or treating, a family-friendly costume contest, an all-ages dance party and food trucks. Oct. 26. 

  28. Check out some of these Halloween bar crawls: Crawl-Oween (Oct. 26); Midtown Halloween (Oct. 26); Halloweekend Pub Crawl Atlanta (Oct. 27); and Halloween in the Highlands (Oct. 27).

  29. The Georgia Latino Film Festival shows films that are directed, produced, acted and written by Latinos. Oct. 26 -- 28. 

  30. Walker Stalker Con has celebrities, panels, vendors and a party at the Georgia World Congress Center. Oct. 26 -- 28. 

  31. The Atlanta Steampunk Exposition celebrates all things mad science and the Victorian era and features panel discussions, craft classes, vendors, parties and a costume ball. Oct. 26 -- 28. 

  32. Looking for Halloween parties? Check out Nightmare on 13th Street (Oct. 27); Saints & Sinners Ball at Park Tavern (Oct. 27); Boos and Brews at Center Stage Theater (Oct .27); and Scarendipity Halloween Bash at 229 Howard St. NE (Oct. 27).

  33. The Atlanta World Kite Festival and Expo invites you to bring a kite or buy one, for a fun day of flying at Piedmont Park. Oct. 27. 

  34. The Haints and Saints Halloween Parade brings floats, decorated hearses, classic cars, marching bands and live music to Decatur. Oct. 27. 

  35. Goblins in the Garden at Atlanta Botanical Garden invites kids to show off their costumes on the Goblin Runway, make fall-themed crafts, hear a storyteller, ride a pony or a train, and enjoy scarecrows in the garden. Oct. 28. 

  36. The  Atlanta History Center celebrates Day of the Dead with an outdoor festival with Mexican food, entertainment, storytelling, altars honoring the departed and free entry. Oct. 28.

  37. Georgia A-Scary-Um gives children wearing costumes free admission and treats at Georgia Aquarium. Oct. 31.
